Medical laboratory scientists play a crucial role in the healthcare team. They perform laboratory tests to analyze body fluids, which aids in diagnosing, treating, and monitoring diseases. The results from medical laboratory tests are used in making 70% of healthcare decisions. Clinical laboratory sciences are essential in improving the quality and standard of life.
Goal: To train skilled technicians of medical laboratory sciences to work in various fields of clinical laboratory, contribute to a quality health care system, and work in specialized clinical labs.
Degrees Offered: B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Sciences, M.Sc. Food Microbiology, and Laboratory Medicine (short-term course)
Facilities: Five Laboratories for Biochemistry, Immunology, Microbiology, Mycology, and Parasitology.
The Number of faculty members: 11 (including 1 Professor, 1 Associate Professor, 8 Assistant Professors, and 1Instructor)
Number of technicians in the department’s lab: 11 (including 3 Ph.D. technicians, 6 M.Sc. technicians, and 2 B.Sc. technicians)
History of the Department
Iran University of Medical Sciences (previously called the Iran Medical Center) first admitted students for B.S. of Medical Laboratory Sciences in 1977. After the Cultural Revolution, it also trained A.D. and Ph.D. students of Medical Laboratory Sciences (up to 1994). Then, it admitted students for A.D. and non-continuous B.S. (regular and evening programs)—the first group of continuous B.S. Medical Laboratory Sciences students were recognized in 2008. Currently, students study in regular B.S. programs in Medical Laboratory Sciences. Students of this discipline are trained in equipped and separate basic and specialized laboratories of the Department and the School, which include:
- Biochemistry Laboratory
- Hematology Laboratory
- Histology Laboratory
- Immunology and serology Laboratory
- Microbiology Laboratory
- Mycology Laboratory
- Parasitology Laboratory
